As of April 2006, eye care manufacturer, Bausch & Lomb suspended the sale of ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution after health officials linked the product to a serious side effects including fungal infections of the eye. Per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, investigators are reviewing reports of 109 cases of suspected Fusarium keratitis involving victims in 17 states as of June 2005. A staggering 26 of the 28 of the 30 interviewees reported using ReNu brand products.

As of February 2006, Bausch & Lomb ceased the sale of ReNu in HongKong and Singapore due to an increase in the fungal infection. Over 25 million Americans wear soft contact lenses and as such a percentage may have purchased and used this product.

As of May 2006, Bausch & Lomb confirmed that cases of Fusarium keratitis had been reported by ReNu contact lens users in Europe. This is the first instance the Bausch and Lomb acknowledged European cases since the news of the serious fungul condition went public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also indicated that over a dozen victims diagnosed with the fungus had used a different ReNu product, ReNu Multiplus, which the company still continues to sell. In at least six different cases, according to the CDC, victims used solutions from two other companies.

As of May 2006, Bausch & Lomb permanently pulled from the market ReNu MoistureLoc due to numerous numbers of reports that the product can lead to the fungal infection.
