ReNu
ReNu Lawsuit

April 13, 2006 —The first lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb claiming damage from its recalled product, ReNu with MoistureLoc lens solution was filed in federal court. The lawsuit alleges that Bausch and Lob failed to disclose to users the serious potential health problems with its contact lens solution.

The complaint is based on evidence indicating that Bausch and Lomb knew of a link between ReNu and fusarium keratitis as early as February 2006, but continued to sell the product until mid-April 2006.

The CDC provided the following information on 56 of the confirmed fusarium keratitis cases:

32 patients used Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc
15 patients used Bausch & Lomb's ReNU with MultiPlus
7 patients used Bausch & Lomb's ReNu (unspecified product)
6 patients used contact lens solutions manufactured by other companies

The information gathered after the filing of this federal lawsuit suggests Bausch & Lomb knew or should have known of problems with ReNu as early as November 2005, after Hong Kong health officials advised the company of the fungal eye infection risk. This unnecessary delay in removing the product from worldwide consumer access jeopardized the health of consumers who used ReNu with MoistureLoc
